These Etymotic headphones are truly amazing. It took a little bit of bravery on my part to spend the $80 or so for these (retails for $150), but after reading many reviews, they seemed interesting and I thought I would give them a try. They are truly amazing. The sound quality is very good and I am able to crank them to the point where I would not subject my hearing to anything more with my HX4700. Their higher-end version, the ER4, recommends using a dedicated portable amp and these might also recommend using one, but I for one would not ever need more volume.

After reading an article about iPod's damaging hearing and trying to regain consciousness (because ... DUH!), I decided that I would not need the higher end version, which are about twice the price, because they would pretty much just offer more volume, which I do not need. These headphones are great because they fit in my ears and don't fall out. It takes a little work for me to get them out of my ears. The carrying case is great and it helps to protect them because the cord is less likely to get tangled in the case. The package contains the following items:
- 6i Isolator Earphones
- 5 ft. cord with 3.5 mm stereo plug
- Flanged and foam eartips
- 2 replacement filters
- Filter changing tool and filters
- Shirt clip
- Pouch
I especially like the fact that they act like earplugs. The sound is better because of this and as the company says, you don't have to turn them as loud since you don't hear as much outside noise. This has the side-effect of protecting your hearing. They work so well with my iPaq and my listening experience is greatly changed. One thing I noticed immediately, though, is all the background fuzz that the HX4700 adds to the music. When I tried these for the first time, I was standing outside on a relatively windy day. The moment I plugged in the phono plug (with earphones in), I thought the wind had sped up considerably...because of all the noise! It is not too bad when listening to music, though, and I can live with it.
The only drawback I see is that no matter how clean your ears are, ear wax will most likely collect on the buds. I try to clean them off as often as possible because it is not very pleasant. Other than that and their price, they are the best earbuds I know of, without jumping to the next level. As I said earlier, I do not need the extra volume because I would only be more likely to turn the volume higher and they might not even be capable of higher volumes without a dedicated amp, which would be another costly purchase! It would be nice if they could have included more of the pieces that contact the inside of the ears, like the higher end model does. More information |
