Here at ppcpathways.com, we focus on providing our readers with reviews, tips, tricks, and tutorials for pocketpc's. Our original goal was to review products but lately we have been adding more tutorials and there are a few more in the works right now. After recently switching from Windows Media Player 10 to iTunes because of numerous reasons, I am searching for the best way to get music from iTunes on to my ipaq. Upon searching, I have found a few great programs that seem to do what this project requires, but I decided to suggest a few additions before writing the tutorial. It now depends on how quickly the companies that I have contacted to implement these features, but I will still go ahead and find a workaround to the problems I have discovered if this process is taking too long. In the meantime, enjoy our reviews and articles plus don't forget to check out our forums and search tools. Thanks for visiting and please be sure to check back!

Wireless Synchronization with ActiveSync

Published: 06-22-05 at 02:27 PM

Synchronizing with ActiveSync can be a pain sometimes and using wireless to do it can really make it easier and possibly faster. It seems that the default settings make it difficult to sync with ActiveSync, so I thought I'd introduce a new article type called Help and explain exactly what I had to do in order to get this feature working. Some settings that are required are disabled by default and one seems to work just by trying different arrangements. One idea I had was to set up ActiveSync on my server computer and that way, I could sync anytime I wanted because it is always on. There is a small problem, though. I use one Outlook file on multiple computers over the network and I'm curious if ActiveSync would automatically open the Outlook file to synchronize with it. I actually think it would, so I may try that and I'll post some info on that.

Minesweeper

Published: 06-22-05 at 05:23 PM

It seems like Microsoft thinks that the most classic of all games is Solitaire. Pretty much every PC and PocketPC they sell has a copy of this game somewhere on it. However, most Windows PCs also have some extra games, which PocketPC's seem to lack. One of those is Minesweeper. This is another personal favorite of mine because it does require a little bit of logic to conquor the level. While it may not be difficult for those who know exactly how to play, others may find it challenging, especially when on a more difficult level.

Plan Maker (and Discount!)

Published: 06-22-05 at 05:21 PM

Softmaker is well-known for providing PocketPC users with replacements for programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Many PocketPC owners find something (or a lot!) missing in the standard included programs of Pocket Word and Pocket Excel, which remove much of the formatting embedded in each of these files when they are synchronized, leaving users with basically destroyed documents, if they have any formatting, especially pictures.

HX4700 Problems and Skype!

Published: 06-18-05 at 10:54 PM

Since a number of users have been searching for "HX4700 Problems," I thought a summary of some of the known problems would be nice. Multiple sources have told me that there is probably going to be an update for the HX4700 and I am really looking forward to that. Some reasons may make me want to hold back from the upgrade, but in the end, I think I will force myself to continue and hopefully, notice a lot of improvements. Skype is one of my new favorite programs of all time...

High Noon Drifter Dead Man's Gulch (Freeware)

Published: 06-22-05 at 02:27 PM

It is not too often that excellent free games and software is put out. By this, I simply mean that the overall look and feel is not as professional as most commercial software is. Obviously, this is not always the case, especially when it comes to FairUse Wizard, which is an amazing piece of software with a commercial-quality interface. When free software is available, my motto is to download it even if I don't plan on using it and save it because it might not be free forever. Like most people, I save all downloads on another hard drive (which is also backed up--very important).

HX4700 Software Update

Published: 06-22-05 at 02:27 PM

HP has recently released an update for the HP iPAQ HX4700. This update fixes a potential audio problem that could cause damage to the device. Some call this a very important update and I agree because I was reading about some speaker problems with the HX4700 and this update should help avoid the problems, if not solve them completely. The fixes included in this update are as follows:

  • Fixes issue with the potential for speaker damage from third-party audio applications that generate a very high-volume audio signal.
  • Fixes issue where the Microphone Automatic Gain Control (AGC) setting was not saved after a power cycle.

Calligrapher 7.5

Published: 06-18-05 at 10:51 PM

Phatware has released an update that solved the problem I described earlier in 7.4 that caused continual soft-resetting of my HX4700 when this and Battery Pack Pro were installed at the same time. There are some other great improvements in this version as described here:
  • Significantly improved PenCommander functionality; new user-defined functions and more.
  • Addressed several compatibility issues reported by users.
  • Updated documentation and PenCommander script reference.
This is a great update and I am finally able to use the new version since the compatibility problem was solved. The good news is that this update is free to all owners of 7.x versions of Calligrapher, so updating should be a quick and easy process. Please post your feelings about the new version in the message board for this news story.

Fair Use Wizard

Published: 06-18-05 at 10:50 PM

Finally, we can all rejoice because of this amazing program. This wizard allows users to easily convert DVD movies to DivX files that will be of a certain size and therefore, are exactly the correct size to fit on a PocketPC device. I am so happy with the quality of this program that I am confident to say that every other program with similar features to this is a waste of money. Fair Use is technically free, but if you want to make movies that are more than 700mb in size, you must pay for the full version, which is much less expensive than other programs like this.

Armor 1900

Published: 06-18-05 at 10:49 PM

How unfortunate is it that with all this amazing technology we have, we are unable to take these wonderful devices with us when the weather is rainy or to the beach around sand and water? Amazingly, Otter Box has virtually solved this problem completely! The ability for me to carry my HX4700 with me when I go to the pool or out in the rain just adds to the overall value of my device. This wonderful case protects PocketPC's from just about everything you can imagine--water, dust, sand, and even drops.
